💥*Sound On!🔥 PLANKING LIKE AN IDIOT? STOP IT.
Everybody loves them! They can be an incredible exercise, or they can be a mediocre one. It comes down to the technique used with them. If you focus on the form it can become a full-body workout. If you relax into it and follow the path of least resistance it’s not going to be as effective. Tag someone who needs planking tips!
When you get into the plank focus on maintaining a neutral pelvic position for a pilates style plank, or more of a posterior tuck for a gymnastic style plank. It’s going to depend on your goals and your body. Do whatever makes you feel the most actively engaged. If you are someone who lives in a posterior tilt it’s likely to be more challenging to hold a neutral tilt. If you are usually in anterior tilt it will probably be more difficult to tuck into posterior.
Actively press the ground away from you, trying to reach your spine up to the ceiling. Be mindful not to allow your shoulders to collapse toward one another or to shrug upward. Maintain a “proud chest”, trying to keep width across the collar bone. Press through every finger and the palm rather than collapsing into the wrist. Apply a micro bend to keep the arms active and prevent hyperextending and dumping into the elbow joints to support your weight.
Pin the feet together, squeeze the glutes, and think about pulling the hands toward the feet as if you are going to wrinkle up the floor beneath you. They will not actually move but that extra shift in energy will make it much more difficult for you! Keep challenging yourself. Time yourself doing it the way you normally do it and then try it with all of these tips. I bet it will be about half the time!
