What did you have for breakfast this morning? If it was pancakes, you’re among good company as today is #NationalPancakeDay
But do you know WHY today is pancake day? It’s because today is Shrove Tuesday, or better known to some as “Fat Tuesday” aka: Mardi Gras!
It's the last day before Lent, the traditional 40 days of abstinence before Easter practiced by Christians. The custom was to empty the pantry of all sugar, fats, and eggs to avoid temptation and reduce waste. An easy way to consume these ingredients is by making large batches of pancakes.
Now while we don’t observe Shrove Tuesday or Lent in our home, Mardi Gras from an event point of view has always captivated me. In my “Festivals” class at the college I teach at, no one has ever correctly answered the question, “What is the Largest Festival in the World”. My students always confidently shout out, “Coachella” or “Tomorrowland” or “Glastonbury” and are shocked when I laugh at all those answers. Then they ask for a hint and I enjoy watching every single students jaw drop when I tell them that its a religious festival.
Rio Carnival is the largest festival in the world attracting 2 MILLION people per day for this five day festival! Occasionally, Mardi Gras also lands on my birthday which adds to the allure and excitement of this event for me.
I had been waiting for 2019 to arrive, as I had wanted to take a trip to New Orleans at the very least to celebrate on my birthday... but last year was... well... not my year.
So, I’ve reset my calendar and I’m now looking forward to 2030!
However, in the mean time back at home, while we typically don’t celebrate Shrove Tuesday... we still love pancakes, so we’ve made every Sunday pancake day! Liam looks forward to this all week and it gives our family and activity we can all do together. Liam loves helping out in measuring the ingredients and mixing it all together. Madison loves eating them as it’s something different for a change. And Ethan... well maybe someday with enough exposure, he’ll realize there is more to life than goldfish crackers.
How about you? Are pancakes on your menu for today?
