There is so much of life that is out of our control. It’s a flip of the coin tossed in the air. One sides heads. And on the other side is a deep fog your just waiting to clear.
Dr. Juan Gonzales, (everyone knew him as Dr. Juan) sat on the bench with his head in his hands. It had been 5 16 hour days in a row in the ER and he was tired and unsure of everything he had learned. Being the Chief of the ER at Lenox Hill Hospital he had seen more patients this past week then he had seen all last month. So much hopelessness and despair. But when he closed his eyes all he could see was the image of the little boy he must have been 3 or 4 looking up at his Mom who was being wheeled away on a gurney into the Emergency Room door. Isabella held her son Miguel’s hand and promised him she wouldn’t be gone for long and they would be back together again soon even though Dr. Juan could see in her eyes she wasn’t really sure. He watched Miguel holding on to his Mom’s pant leg not wanting to let go as his Aunt led him away.
Dr Juan always believed strongly in Science and trusted implicitly everything he had learned in Medical School, but on that night he kneeled by Isabella’s bed while she was lying in a coma and prayed.
On the following morning when Dr Juan came to check on Isabella’s vital signs, he was amazed. They were looking better and the nurse said she had been awake.
He made the call. And as he sat on the bench he remembered the moment when everything changed. Isabella was being wheeled into the main lobby of the Hospital and Juan watched as Miguel ran towards his Mom faster than he had ever ran before. Watching Isabella with tears in her eyes hold her son was the greatest gift of all. The day when Dr Juan believed in hope again as he watched the cherry blossoms swaying in the Central Park mall.
